Akane Aoi and Yashiro Nene have been friends since attending Kamome Gakuen's middle school division and onto high school. The two of them were in the gardening club, seen by their close friendship in the school's album pictures. Nene sometimes notes on Aoi's popular girl status, causing boys to swoon after her and offering practical advice despite not having romanced anyone. However, she has relations with Aoi Akane, a classmate and a long-term childhood friend. The two of them currently live next door, their apartment windows directly across from each other.
Although Aoi doesn't hold any serious feelings for Akane, she does have a deep appreciation and admiration for his hard-worked efforts at studying and devotion. However, she portrays it in a quirky way, even playfully refusing Akane's attempts of confession or asking her hand in marriage. Unfortunately, if they were to marry, her name would be Aoi Aoi after inheriting Akane's last name. In terms of academics, she studies and works hard, raising her from the top 50 to No.1 of the school rankings for the final exams. She is also adept at telling rumors, serving as an exposition for introducing them to Nene.
As a child, Aoi was naïve and gullible when it came to her father's frequent lying and her classmates' constant picking on her (eg. pulling on her hair or knocking her over). Akane was the background witness of these incidents, and he has sworn himself to protect her from anything bad later on. Over time, the two maintained a close friendship of reading books or studying together, until Aoi developed an ingenuine persona when attending Kamome Gakuen. She was perceived to be smart, kind, and beautiful, which led to people being innately drawn to her or accusing her for tempting boys. In reality, she despised the attention she was given and refrained from confiding in her troubles with her close friend, Nene; even so much as putting on a cheerful act around her. However, due to her dislike of being lied to, she was led to believe that nobody could understand how she felt--which had caused the growing desire to separate herself from everybody else.

Yashiro Nene[]
Nene is Aoi's close friend who she tells scary stories to. Recently, Nene starts to get worried when she hears Aoi's scary stories because it has been proven to come true every time. Aoi worries about Nene's bad sense in choosing men, and chats with her about various things. Seeing Nene busy, Aoi becomes afraid that Nene was avoiding her because she didn't like her anymore, but Nene assures Aoi that it is not true.
Hanako[]
Although not directly, Aoi meets Hanako-kun after he possesses Nene's body. In the midst of trying to say something important to her, she is pushed to the floor and he attempts to seduce her. This enrages Akane who was watching the two, ultimately knocking Hanako-kun out of Nene's body before Nene's soul was able to return back.
Aoi Akane[]
Akane and Aoi are childhood friends. Ever since a young age, Akane has been in love with Aoi, obsessed, even. He has said he likes everything about her, but that the best part of her is a "secret". He says he is satisfied with his life as long as Aoi is alive. He confesses his love to Aoi who he calls "Ao-chan" multiple times a day, and Aoi declines every time with a smile. Aoi says that she turns him down because her name would become "Aoi Aoi" if they ever married since Akane's family name is Aoi. Though Aoi rejects him every time, she felt lost when a supernatural causes Akane to date Lemon.
During their first year of high school, Aoi tells Akane that she will accept his proposition if he manages to make her heart flutter, telling him to work harder.
Aoi and Akane have lived next door to each other ever since Akane's family moved in next to Aoi's family when Akane and Aoi were 3. At first, Aoi didn't like him, because he was naturally liked by others, unlike her. She thought he was earnest, upfront and hardworking, and claims to both love and hate that about him. She said that he's a good person.
In Chapter 69, Aoi says that even if she accepted Akane's confession, it would never work out, and he would only end up disappointed. She accuses him of not truly understanding anything about her and only liking the version of her that he's made up in his head, like everyone else. She says that she's confused why Akane keeps on putting her on a pedestal because she's not anything like Akane says her to be. After that, she calls him out on lying to her about his supernatural powers, calling him a liar. She is about to leave when Akane stops her by grabbing her hand and pulling her to the ground. He says he does understand Aoi, on a much deeper level than she even realizes. Akane claims to utterly despise Aoi and tells her all the things he hates about her. He calls her a pretentious, untrustful, condescending, egoistical coward whose beauty is only skin-deep. Aoi starts crying and claims to hate Akane as well, but Akane interrupts her again to recall the only time they ever fought before this incident.
When they were in grade school, Akane and Aoi got into a fight, but when Akane yelled out "I hate you, Ao-chan!" he noticed that she had begun to cry. He was shocked, because he had never seen her cry before, so when he saw her crying because of something he had said, he thought she was just so cute.
Only minutes after stating he hated Aoi, Akane says that he loves Aoi, and always will, claiming to have lied earlier. Aoi is astounded and starts blushing when Akane teases her for crying when she thought Akane despised her, only for Aoi to get more flustered and punch him. When Akane asks Aoi if she likes him too, she doesn't say anything. Akane considers that as a "yes", and says he knows her so well that she doesn't have to say anything. The two appear to be about to kiss when Teru interrupts them.
While walking from the far shore to the near shore with Teru, Aoi says that she likes giraffes, but doesn't get to see them often. Akane asks if she's trying to say she wants to go to a zoo with him, to which Aoi only blushes. After that, the two make plans of what they want to do once they return. They planned to go to the zoo, play video games, and "other stuff like that". After Aoi asks Akane what he likes, he simply replies "I like you, Ao-chan." Instead of being indifferent to Akane's confessions like before, Aoi starts tearing up and wishes she would have told him she liked him as well.
When Akane finds out Aoi is already dead and cannot come back, he is devastated, immediately wanting to go back. Because of the severance, they had no way of interacting until Chapter 85, when Akane returns to the far shore. When they reunite, Akane hugs Aoi and tells her that he didn't know what he would have done if he never saw her again.
Minamoto Teru[]
After seeing Akane's determination into studying for the finals, she decides to launch a plan of her own, leading her to the top of the scoreboards for the final exams. For a brief interaction, she and Teru meet, declaring her victory as No.1, undoubtedly calling the challenge a tie that Akane and Teru set up prior.
In the relay interview of Volume 16, Aoi says that she considers Teru an incredible person who doesn't have any faults, but doesn't like anything about him in particular. She says that Teru isn't her type.
Shinigami-sama[]
After being captured by No. 6, Aoi first formally is greeted by him on a boat in which she awakes. Unknown to her situation, she is rather wary of No. 6 originally. In an attempt to gain her trust he shows a bouquet of flowers, which promptly dies in his touch and explains that she needs to be a sacrifice to correct the boundary between life in death.
Later, she is brought to his boundary and is assumedly brainwashed, having all of her original personality and memories discarded.
